Dr H0ffm4n gave me a friendly nudge-reminder that some of us had discussed setting up a fantasy football (socker) league last week or so.

I had a look at the Premier League's official version, but it seemed a little invasive (they want real names and addresses and such). However: Yahoo have started running theirs again, so I took the liberty of creating a group there. There are no grand prizes for winners -- it's just for fun -- but that kinda seems more HuSi-ish to me anyway. The rules are new on me, although seem straightforward, but I'm sure we'll succeed in making a reet royal hash of it regardless.

You'll need the group ID and the group password to sign up. The ID is 23867. The password is ... available from me via PM. Post here or PM me to get it. I'm slightly reluctant to post it openly as there's a max membership of 50 and any passer-by could enter. The more HuSians, the merrier.

The game's based around the (English) Premier League.

It's pretty tricky, actually -- the money doesn't seem to stretch that far. Arteta is monstrously over-valued (maybe not -- great player -- but still ...)

Yeah.... by Metatone (4.00 / 2) #4 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 03:54:35 PM EST
I normally think of Arteta as good value in these kind of games, but not this time. I also keep looking at players and then having to search the latest news to see if they will even be on the pitch this week.

that can work to your advantage (in the case where you have to field a one-legged girl's blouse in defence owing to lack of funds -- at least they can't lose points).

But this is the first week! by Metatone (4.00 / 2) #6 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:05:40 PM EST
I should try and hold off on the cynicism at least until I finish bottom of the pack a couple of times...

Also, this week (cliche alert) by Metatone (4.00 / 2) #7 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:07:03 PM EST
there don't seem that many easy matches, so it's hard to know who is the patsy...

Yeah by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #8 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:21:38 PM EST

There are some players who are "going cheap" (i.e. woefully undervalued compared with what they're capable of later on), but they're by-and-large in teams who are playing each other. I'm not sure I want to be fiddling with the set-up ad nauseam, though; I'll probably set one team up and let it stand for a while until it gets too terrible to sustain.

Damn! by Breaker (4.00 / 2) #17 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 07:11:02 AM EST
You've also arrived at my managerial plan!

Just keep an eye out for injuries on your players is about all the maintenance you need to do.

I could have done with about by Breaker (4.00 / 2) #19 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 07:57:44 AM EST
20 credits more I think - I have 2 decent strikers, two credible midfielders and a defense that no-one's heard of.

And Given.  Oh yeah.

Aye by yicky yacky (4.00 / 2) #20 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 08:28:16 AM EST

I could have had the original team I was working on for roughly twelve more points, but twenty would have been perfect. I think we can see the teams after they lock it down for week 2 on Saturday. I've got a decent strike force, a good-ish midfield and a patchy defence. Not too keen on the keeper, either (I think he'll concede a few), but Cech was way too expensive.

Hmmm can't see anyone's teams as yet by Breaker (4.00 / 2) #21 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 08:57:27 AM EST
Cech was way overpriced, as were Stevie G and Fat Frank.

My strategy for defense was to pick players that are unlikely to play, and so not lose me any points.

Jump in, by all means. by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #11 Wed Aug 15, 2007 at 04:42:13 PM EST

There're fifty spots available -- or rather, each group can take fifty teams -- but your team can exist independently anyway.

Brum looked pretty good value last night, to be honest -- one astonishing rugby-tackle-floor-press on the keeper notwithstanding.

Might take me a while to set up a team though, these things don't half confuse me.

Excellent by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 07:07:48 AM EST

That's up to nine or ten now. The Yahoo system is a bit more complicated than the Beeb one I'm used to, but that's probably a good thing, as there's a certain level of complexity where it becomes "not worth worrying about too much". As I mentioned to Metatone, the cash doesn't seem to go that far, so you can't spend too long worrying about "the ifs".

OT: I finished 'Watchmen' last night. I have no idea how they plan on filming that. It could possibly be done like 'The Wire', but a 2.5 hour movie? I'm not convinced.

You can only make one transfer per week there but you have 4 subs too.
